Contact IC cards are the same size as the credit cards we commonly see, but their surface embeds an integrated circuit chip with a memory or a microprocessor. IC cards with only a memory chip function like a small disk. They are cheaper than chip cards with a microprocessor, but they can only provide a certain level of security, so they cannot be used to store sensitive or high-value information. Chips containing both memory and a microprocessor are also like a small disk; but they also include a "smart" controller to ** securely add, delete, change and update information on the card. More complex microprocessor chips even build in an "art-form" security feature to protect the card from unauthorized access. Contact IC cards must be inserted into devices with internal probes that can contact the chip on the card surface, so that the device can read and store data. This type of e-Card is widely used in network security, retail, catering membership cards, electronic cash, government ID documents, student cards, e-commerce, medical insurance cards and many ** fields. For FARGO printers, you can optionally add an e-Card platform with a "contact IC encoder". With this option, the printer can read information from the card's memory and print it on the front or back of the card. In addition, it can encode ISO and "JIS II" standard magnetic stripes - all in a single pass of the card.
